Help!

I am 63 years old and have been clear of acne for years (except for the odd spot) after taking two coursed of Roaccutane. Recently I have developed one big spot after another. I haven't changed my diet or my skincare regime so I don't understand what is going on!! I am so afraid that this is the start of my severe acne returning after all these years. People often compliment me on my skin and how young I look. This was after years of suffering from severe acne. I was coming to terms with the scarring that was left on my face but I didn't expect to have to deal with active lesions again. Is anyone else in the same situation as me?

I understand how frustrating and concerning it must feel to suddenly experience breakouts after so many years of clear skin, especially after undergoing Roaccutane treatments. It’s great that people have been complimenting you on your youthful appearance, and I can imagine how difficult it must be to suddenly have to deal with active lesions again.

Even though you haven't changed your diet or skincare routine, there are several factors that could be contributing to the resurgence of acne. One possibility is hormonal changes. At 63, you may be going through hormonal fluctuations, particularly related to menopause or other life changes, which can lead to increased oil production in your skin and result in breakouts. Stress is another factor that can trigger acne. Emotional or physical stress, even in subtle ways, can cause your skin to react with pimples, and changes in your stress levels might be contributing.

Certain medications can also cause acne as a side effect. If you've started taking any new medications recently, it’s worth checking if acne is listed as a potential side effect. Additionally, even small changes in your skincare products or the environment could affect how your skin behaves. For example, shifts in climate, humidity, or even switching up your skincare routine could be triggering the breakouts.

As we age, our skin naturally changes. Your skin’s oil production and texture may be different now than it was before, and this might require a different skincare approach.

If you’re concerned about these breakouts and wondering if it’s the beginning of acne returning, it might be helpful to consult a dermatologist. They can evaluate if there’s an underlying cause like hormonal changes or other factors and help you find the best treatment plan to get your skin back to its clear, healthy state. You’re not alone in this; many people experience acne resurgence later in life, but it can often be managed effectively with the right care.

This post is excellent and I second it.

I am too am sorry you're going through acne again. But seeing a dermatologist WILL help. Your doctor could prescribe you an anti-acne cream and medication combination, though: BUT I think seeing a skin doctor would be best in your situation.

Again, the above post makes absolute sense and I'd give it serious consideration.
